ÓÀÓ¯²ÊƱ is partnering with the Erie Fire Department to support essential training exercises for the city’s firefighters this week in Wehrle Hall, which is scheduled for demolition later this month.
All of Erie’s fire crews will participate in training sessions held at various times from Monday, June 9, through Wednesday, June 11, within the now vacant residence hall. The final group of student residents moved out in May, making the building available for use without disrupting residents or office personnel in similar buildings that would be needed to simulate similar training drills.
The vacant, multi-story structure provides a rare and valuable environment for firefighters to simulate emergency situations in a larger facility — an experience that can’t be fully replicated in standard residential training settings.
“At ÓÀÓ¯²ÊƱ, we’re always looking for ways to support our community, and allowing the Erie Fire Department to use Wehrle Hall for training is one meaningful way we can do that,” said Walter Iwanenko, Ph.D., president of ÓÀÓ¯²ÊƱ. “This opportunity gives our first responders the ability to simulate large-scale emergency scenarios in a real environment without disrupting active buildings. We’re proud to contribute to their preparedness and to the safety of our region.”
Deputy Chief Fred Gillespie said the training exercises will focus on scenarios that are high-risk but low-frequency — such as fires in large or high-rise structures.
“A lot of the structures we deal with are single-family residential fires,” Gillespie said. “This brings an opportunity to explore unique strategies and tactics that differ from a typical house fire. We can drag hose lines through the building, practice forcible entry, ladder work, and learn how to safely evacuate people in an emergency.”
“We’ve only had a handful of high-rise fires in the city,” Gillespie added. “We do train for them, but this opportunity lets us do so without interrupting residents or employees in buildings that are actively in use.”
ÓÀÓ¯²ÊƱ and the Erie Fire Department remind the public that there is no real emergency at this location. Please allow fire crews to carry out their training activities with minimal interruptions.
Demolition on Wehrle Hall is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 16.
